Sept. 27: Here we go!

I'm writing from the Detroit Metropolitan Airport. I made it okay, despite hitting traffic at 6:15am (why are you all going to work so early!?). It seems as though all of my teammates are here. Everyone is getting very excited, though the excitement surely is hiding nervousness as well.

I am chuckling to myself on how much I must have overpacked. I brought a huge piece of luggage (which I checked). It didn't have much in it (in my opinion), but the size of the luggage definitely makes it look like I'm ready to go on a two-week overseas cruise. There are some teammates, on the otherhand, who brought a backpack. That includes all of their race equipment (helmet, shoes, wetsuit, etc.). How can that be? Maybe I can get some pointers from them. At least I have room in my bag to bring back momentos for family and friends!!

I swam... I biked... I ran... I conquered! What a memorable experience! (Ongoing editor's note: There are so many more memories and photos that I want to post on here, so keep checking back. I hope to have all of this up in the next few days!!!) YES, I FINISHED my first Olympic distance triathlon today! Above is the medal that drapes a couple of celebratory drinks! The day started bright and early, like any other race day. We all met in the lobby at 6am with all of our gear so that we could bike to the race site. Riding with your transition bag takes a bit of skill. Combine that with navigating through Washington traffic (which was fortunately minimal at that time of day) and the fact that it was dark out made for an interesting ride. We checked in and set up our transition areas, and then waited for the race to begin. June 14: It's the Little Things that are the Big Triumphs

It's another Saturday, which meant another team training. I was concerned on how well I'd perform today, since I was feeling under the weather yesterday, but I was at around 95%, so off to training I went. The weathe was awesome. Mostly overcast, with the morning starting off around the low 60s. It didn't warm up too much while we were there, maybe getting to 70 or so. There was a stiff wind and it occasionally drizzled at time, which was very refreshing. We worked on our transitions today, which was a welcome event for me since I've never actually done a "formal" transition. We had to start our run towards our bikes (set up on a transition rack) on bare feet (simulating us having just gotten out of the water). On went the socks, shoes, gloves and helmet. And then we had to run our bikes out to the end of the transition area before we could actually mount the bikes. Overall time: one minute 31 seconds. September 30: Feeling Good

I turned in early last night (around 11pm). It's obvious that I don't stay out late often and that I can't hang with the young crowd anymore. Some of the group didn't come in until after 2am. That's a rare thing for me, and after a day of racing, I surely wasn't up for that! I woke up this morning and I felt great. My right hip flexor was a bit sore, but not to the point of concern. I ended up doing a bit more sight-seeing before we would all meet back at the hotel to go to the airport. I decided to head over to the Smithsonian's Museum of Archives, where the Constitution, Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, and so much more is housed.
