A New Race, A New Start

I set up my new Team in Training page today. (Check it out at http://www.active.com/donate/tntmi/andi and let me know what you think!) It's kind of a wierd feeling. Though I now have the experience of completing a race through this program, the same original fears are creeping up on me. Fears about the course (the Wildflower is one of the hardest in the country), fears about fundraising (I am starting from scratch), fears about time and life balance. I've always been one to stare fear in the face and say "you are not my problem", using that fear to fuel my desire to find a solution. I will persevere this time, too.

I won't be able to tap into the same crowd I did last time for donations (though if any of you are reading this and need a last minute tax deductable donation at the end of the year, keep me in mind!!). Sorry for the shameless plug *smile* I'm going to have to get creative this time around. I'm also going to have to set a good example, because I have officially been asked to be a team mentor for all of the new athletes that have never done a race through the TNT program. I'm really excited about that, and am truly honored to have been asked. It's hard to believe that just this May, I was in the same place that they were.

I'm proud on how far I've come on so many levels. (I couldn't have done it without the help of a ton of people. Family, friends, strangers.) At the same time, though, I'm excited to face this next challenge and look forward to that finish line when May comes around. I hope you stick around to follow me in this journey.

Meeting two heroes in one day

Soon after I signed off at the airport yesterday, I was priveledged to meet someone that I have admired for quite some time. She is beautiful, courageous, and strong. Her name is Hayley, and she is four years old. This beautiful blonde hair blue eyed child was diagnosed with childhood leukemia last year, and she is our team hero. Fortunately, her cancer is now in remission. Her dad, Chris, will be racing along with us tomorrow. (You can read about his story here .) Chris and his wife Katie didn't think that they would all be able to go down with the team. Three plane tickets are expensive, especially in this economy. But an anonymous donor bought the ticket for Hayley to be able to join her dad and the rest of the team. To whoever that was, thank you. We are all thrilled that Hayley and her family is here with us. May 21: My First Swim Practice

Today was our first group swim. I was pretty nervous going in, and had no idea what to expect. All I knew was that somehow, we would swim 1500 yards. I had no concept of how far that was, other than the fact that that equates to three pretty long par 5s in golf. It turns out I wasn't the only nervous one. Many pepole there felt the same way as me. We had about 20-25 people show up in the group swim, which made for a lot of fun. Everyone was upbeat and enthusiastic, despite the nerves. When we started, I was so nervous I forgot to put my goggles down (and here I was wondering why I couldn't see anything!). Good thing I didn't lose my contacts! As time went on, I gained my confidence. I'm lucky. I grew up around water, and actually swam competitively in grade school. Though the techniques have changed, I think I caught on pretty quick.
